Get into the PR groove

You are who Google says you are. It’s every business owners aim to have your business listed on page one of Google’s search results, and to be a business that people have heard of for all the right reasons. In order to get that to happen you need to engage in some public relations for your business. But how you go about generating publicity for your business can be a little overwhelming when you have not had to do it before.

This week the guests and I talk about the importance of public relations, what it all means and how you can go about generating your own publicity for free or for a very low cost. The guests explain the PR is not just about gaining exposure through mainstream media, for some businesses they may get better traction through networking, writing articles or releasing podcasts. The purpose and intent of any PR activity is as much about releasing good quality content to your audience and positioning yourself as the expert in your field. Well planned and thought out public relations activities will do that for your business, the guests this week share how you can achieve this for your own business.

When life gives you lemons

When life gives you lemons do you make lemonade, drink tequila or do you retreat to your cave to lick your wounds and recover.

Today we hear from 3 very different guests all of whom have overcome great adversity in their business lives. Two were impacted by ‘acts of God’ which then led to physical adversity to overcome, while our other guest was impacted through signing legal documents.

What you will hear from each of the guests is their own very personal stories of what happened, how each incident impacted them and their businesses and where they are now. With the help of a little time and perspective they share the lessons that they have taken away from the experience and where each of their businesses are as a result of what occurred.

A big thanks to this week’s guests for sharing such personal inspiring stories.

Tell me why

Simon Sinek suggested in his book “Start With Why” that people don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.

This simple statement and the accompanying Ted Talk around his ‘golden circle’ formula is the basis for today’s conversation. His whole premise sent me into an almost tailspin of manic proportions trying to identify my passions, my reasons for being in business… my why.

Today I speak with a bunch of people around their own ‘why’. Some, like the Word Stylist Liz Campbell have identified their why from an early age and have been able to carry that forward into every part of their business. Some, like our discovery coach Natasha Vanzetti help people in business to figure out what their desires and goals are. Others, like the Clarity CEO Geoff Hetherington challenge us to have a public why and a private why and to keep our passion pragmatic.

We discuss the concept of what Emily Wapnick refers to as a ‘multipotentialite’ and whether being a puttylike person can help or hinder or business success. If you haven’t caught Emily’s Ted Talk on “Why some of us don’t have one true calling” I encourage you to watch it on youtube.

Whether you are new to the whole concept of discovering your why in business or whether you are someone who identified what lights you up a long time ago I’m sure you will find value in what our guests have to share in this week’s episode.
