Tell me why

Simon Sinek suggested in his book “Start With Why” that people don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.

This simple statement and the accompanying Ted Talk around his ‘golden circle’ formula is the basis for today’s conversation. His whole premise sent me into an almost tailspin of manic proportions trying to identify my passions, my reasons for being in business… my why.

Today I speak with a bunch of people around their own ‘why’. Some, like the Word Stylist Liz Campbell have identified their why from an early age and have been able to carry that forward into every part of their business. Some, like our discovery coach Natasha Vanzetti help people in business to figure out what their desires and goals are. Others, like the Clarity CEO Geoff Hetherington challenge us to have a public why and a private why and to keep our passion pragmatic.

We discuss the concept of what Emily Wapnick refers to as a ‘multipotentialite’ and whether being a puttylike person can help or hinder or business success. If you haven’t caught Emily’s Ted Talk on “Why some of us don’t have one true calling” I encourage you to watch it on youtube.

Whether you are new to the whole concept of discovering your why in business or whether you are someone who identified what lights you up a long time ago I’m sure you will find value in what our guests have to share in this week’s episode.

A big thanks to this week’s guests:

Should you write a book?

In the words of Guy Kawasaki “Starting your book is only the first five miles of a twenty-six-mile marathon that’s one-third of a triathlon (authoring, publishing, and entrepreneuring).” Seems more and more entrepreneurs are putting pen to paper as a way of building their credibility within their industry.

So this week we take a look at why you would want to author your own book, how do you go about writing a book and what are some of the things you can expect along the way. We hear from Jacqueline Pretty, a self publishing expert and a couple of our past guests who have authored their own books as they share their success stories since publishing their books.

A big thanks to this week’s guests:

  • how to survey clients to find out what your business is good at
  • paid research the pros and cons

Business ownership ~ the loneliest journey

Welcome to Season 2 Episode 7 of “Not Another Business Show”. This week is our first ever ‘minisode’ as I’ve spent the early part of this week hanging out at the real estate marketing Armageddon conference. 3 days of full on, business changing information with an amazing line up of speakers, including the one and only Gary Vaynerchuk. Being surrounded by that kind of amazing energy got me thinking…

As business owners and entrepreneurs, how do we keep ourselves motivated?

So while I was sitting in my hotel room I decided to pull together some pearl of wisdom from some of our former guests on how they stay motivated in business. From podcasts to books, exercise to accountability groups they share a lot of great information which hopefully you can use to expand your motivational repertoire.

A big thanks to this weeks guests:

Elizabeth Gillam from Franchisee Success

Alison McGrath from McGrath HR

The ‘Discovery’ coach, Natasha Vanzetti

James Crook from Choc Chip Digital

Jason Malouin from The Portrait Store

Broken Phones Make Girls Cry ~ The Life Of An Entrepreneur

Buckminster Fuller calls it the Critical Path, all the little twists and turns our lives take to get us to where we are right now. Seems that for an entrepreneur these twists and turns feel more like roller coasters, with unexpected loops thrown in for good measure. It takes a certain kind of person to want to hold the reins of destiny in their own hands and this episode we chat to a few who have done just that.

With lessons on never trying to predict where a business idea will come from and the role of fate in our destiny through to learning how to say no and the power that comes from moving towards a goal greater than yourself. My guests today cover a whole lot of ground.

Sometimes the best lessons come in the form of stories from those on the road not travelled.

This week’s guests have certainly all had interesting journeys so far. They share great insights like “broken phones make girls cry” and there is no room in the land of entrepreneurs for victims.

Pitch Perfect

Pitching… It’s not just a baseball reference. Seems everywhere you turn in the business world these days someone is talking about pitching. Social pitches, sales pitches, media pitches, investor pitches, so many different styles of pitches. But what do they all mean?

What do we need to know in order to create a compelling social pitch for our business, and are there attributes of a pitch that can be utilised across the many other styles of pitches?

This week the guests and I dive into the wonderful world of pitching and discuss what is it that makes your pitch stand out from the crowd, how you begin to differentiate yourself in a crowded market and what are the mistakes people make when they’re pitching.

Tales from the Trenches

Let’s face it when you’re a business owner not everyday is filled with sunshine and roses, somedays it can feel like a truck full of fertiliser and thunderstorms. How you handle all the ups and downs of business ownership can be a lonely journey. This week our guests share some of their personal ‘stories from the trenches’, how they dealt with the things that didn’t go their way and how they built their businesses to the success they are now.

We have guests who were successful in their own right overseas then chose to pack up everything and relocate to Australia to start it all again, another guest who felt like getting into business was just ‘a fluke’. Even the mayor of Queensland’s fastest growing city, Paul Pisasale joins us to discuss what he has learnt in a career that crossed over from private enterprise, hospitality to local government.

Content Marketing

This week on Not Another Business Show we talk content marketing.

Often mistaken as ‘just’ blogging, it actually encompases every piece of material your business puts out in the public domain. From your website and brochures to articles, podcasts or videos.

Today the masters in content marketing share with us how you create content that will hit the mark with your clients, they explain how you need to structure your content to ensure it is compelling and how to compose the perfect headline that will capture the attention of your audience.

We talk publishing platforms and how to test your content with your audience to ensure you are getting the best ‘bang for your buck’. And Wendy shares some great insights around researching and understanding your market

One of the hot topics during the show was creating your own content strategy, I mentioned that I would link out to templates from our guests (or you can google Content Strategy Template and find one that works for you).  As promised included here are the templates to create your own content strategy from Dan Norris’ “Content Machine”

Creating your personal brand

Personal branding is a topic that is gaining traction amongst small business owners. The need to differentiate ourselves from our business is the topic of today’s show.

I invite a personal branding expert, media expert and a professional headshot photographer to all weigh in on the reasons why as small business owners we need to take the development of our own personal brand seriously.

During the course of our conversation I uncover the 5 steps to developing your own personal brand, how having a personal brand will assist you in gaining media exposure and why a personal brand is more than just words on a page. We discuss the importance of having a clear focus with your personal brand and why your personal brand is as much about recognising your audience as it is about you.

My guests share a little about what to expect when you are developing your personal brand, how long it can take and why utilising the media in building your personal brand is ‘marketing by stealth’.

You will find the supporting article to this episode available on Linkedin Pulse and as always a complete show transcription will appear on the website within a couple of weeks.

As always a big thanks to my guests this week

Planning for success

Welcome back to Episode 1, Season 2 of Not Another Business Show. Hope you have all had a great start to your 2016.

For our first episode back the guests and I talk through different ways you can plan to make 2016 your most successful year yet. There is plenty of gold throughout the episode including reviewing your year that was, planning out your calendar the year in advance, financial metrics and what’s the one thing you really want to achieve this year.

My guests this week include Australia’s number 1 small business author, Andrew Griffiths, New York Times best selling author, Kevin Kruse and the Clarity CEO Geoff Hetherington.

We don’t just stop at how to make 2016 your most successful year ever, once you wrung all the gold from that conversation we move on to hearing some of the best productivity hacks that you are likely to hear in one conversation.

Hacks like batching your days, or using your calendar instead of a ‘to do’ list to make sure your days are as productive as possible, and possibly one of the most important numbers you’re likely to hear… 1440.

A big thanks to our Episode 1 guests, Australia’s number 1 small business author and all round Mr nice guy, Andrew Griffiths
